Fond Memories Resonates

One of the things for me is I get frustrated on some peoples behavior in our communities, the disrespect for others and the surroundings or the unkindness displayed towards other people then I think of my time in Chiang Mai and a overwhelming sense of calmness comes over me. The thing that impacts me here in the states is my work with the children this allows me to see hope in humanity.

Really I think it's more that I get frustrated with myself for taking it in, the energy and negative vibration from some. It used to be I was really hard on myself about things and now it's more of a learning tool which allows me the opportunity to use the creative resources within.

Going to Thailand was a very profound experience that still resonates deeply! It's one of those things that before going there was a certain image and expectation of how the framework of the travels were going to unfold and of course it was not even close.

The outer reason of going was to study massage as I mentioned before. My life shifted and I was impacted by different aspects. Sometimes for us to grow, expanding our consciousness and elevate to higher peaks the draw to something that may be important for us which we don't see is camouflaged my some interest, in my case learning massage in another country but the real deeper reason was revealed during the moments of being in the Kingdom of Thailand and still resonates with me today.

I have a few mementoes from my travels there, several being gifts given to me which I am Grateful that provides me with fond memories of my interactions with the Thai people.

Gift of Discovery

Ever since my trip to Chiang Mai, Thailand just over a year ago (which seems like ages) I dreamt of returning and how I could someday retire there. As I reflect on my experiences, the people that I've met and connecting with the mementos that I brought back send a warm feeling throughout my being!

While I was there I asked myself how could I live there?, What would or could I do to make a living? One of the answers was have an online business but did not know how to go about it. Sure, I've done a few blogs and even had a personal website: http://connect2mp.com but still didn't know how to break into the industry.

In May 2010 while attending a course in Los Angeles I heard of a new course that had been put together by Peak Potentials called the Ultimate Internet Bootcamp. I knew I wanted to go and the first 2 courses was offered while I was going to be in Europe during August. There were no other dates set but I kept my eye on the website and as soon as the next course was offered I signed up.

As a result just a few short weeks ago I launched GiftofDiscovery.com it is about Travel and Study with Adventure. Although it is geared to massage students interested in studying Thai massage in Thailand and to have a cultural and adventurous experience, there is also a section on Thai Cooking. So whether you are interested or just dreaming in going, you have an adventure spirit, or you have been bit by the traveling bug you may also benefit from what I offer on the site.

I am still new at this but I am passionate about three aspects of this site: Travel, Massage, and Cooking. I enjoy sharing information and perhaps at some point we will have custom tours arranged depending on your interest.

A Wonderful Educational Experience

As I mentioned before the seed was planted about 10 years ago to go to Thailand when I took a introduction course in Thai massage in San Diego. When I started to plan for the trip about a year ago I knew that I was going to Chiang Mai, Thailand to study massage and I got so much more! Many things about this trip was educational and insightful. I took in the culture and allowed myself to try a variety of things with the intention of not allowing my preconceived ideas to interfere with the experience. The trip not only opened my mind but allowed me to expand in many dimensions! I took different type of classes and learned many things on this path which increased my awareness. The complete voyage was one big classroom! I am grateful for these many experiences and the expansion of my consciousness. From these moments I am now at a place of introspect and redesigning my life.The massage school that I ended up at was perfect for me at that moment. There are many schools and teachers that you can learn Thai massage from. Even though I did hours of research before I went another valuable resource is just to talk to students. As I mentioned in earlier post the school that I went to is called "The School of Massage for Health".

The staff was warm and friendly. I enjoyed and value the personal attention given by many of the instructors. One of the largest draws was how flexible the classes are. This allows the opportunity for traveling students to not have such a rigid course schedule and the freedom to explore the area. For example I started my first class on a Thursday and for the following weeks I continued to take different classes while also going to cooking and jewelery making courses as well.

The school is in the Northwest of the City and surrounded by many wonderful healthy restaurants with delicious food at great prices. SMH offers a variety of interesting courses and they really do work with you. I met many wonderful people from all over the world here. When I return at the end of the year I will at least come by to say hello to my SMH family and probably take a class or two.
As I've mentioned previously I took 60 hours of Thai Massage as well as 30 hours in Reflexology, a day course in Herbal Thai Compress, and a special course in Tok-Sen which is my favorite. Next time I go to Thailand I would like to find a teacher who specialized in it so I can take more intense training in this area. I've really enjoyed practicing Tok-Sen and Herbal Compress, since I've been back and get great feedback.
Thai work is very different from what I've been practicing for a number of years. Although you can do Thai massage and similar modalities on a massage table it is traditional done on a mat on the floor. In the few months that I was there and the multiple massages that I received I did not have one on the table. Doing the work on the floor I feel I serve the people that I touch more fully. Because the Thai work (at this level) is new for me I do feel I need to work at it more and that I am more in my head. The flow is just not quite there yet like in Tuina or other modalities that I practiced in the 17 years of study/practice.

Many years before I took my first massage class it spoke to me and I did not understand until I finally took that first course at IPSB it felt natural. I definitely connected to the gift of touch that I possess. Even in earlier massage sessions the feedback that I received from clients and people I worked on supported this path that I was on. During the many classes that I took I met many people who contribute to my development and it was a very healing experience. So ending up in Thailand when I did was perfect! This fed my passion and reminded me of the quality in my touch. I am reinspired to do more bodywork. Intuitivly I am reminded not to hold back and share this gift with the world.
My extreme thanks to all the teachers, students, and people that I have crossed paths with on this journey. Your lives have touched mine and contribute to me being who I am in the world!

Magic Tattoo

Before going to Thailand I knew that I was going to have some tattoo work done. Early in 2006 I came across some artwork with Polar Bears with a night moon that I thought would make a fantastic tattoo. So during a tattoo convention that May in San Diego I had a few hours done with a guy who was from Colorado and came down just for the convention. I was really impressed with the work. He was able to get the big bear on my arm with some trees and outline for continued work. My thoughts of expanding the work led me to get another polar bear while I was traveling in Europe a few years later.
I searched the Internet for tattoo artists in Chiang Mai, Thailand. After reading many customer comments on websites I had found the place I wanted to get my work done....Magic Tattoo.
Having the shop's information I tried to find them on a map but the only location stuff I found was general and once I arrived in Chiang Mai I was overwhelmed with how to get around in the City and was concern that I could not find the place. The first night that I arrived I went to get something to eat nearby where I was staying and came across a Tattoo shop. It seemed like a decent place and thought maybe I will end up just getting my work done there if I could not easily find Magic. After my meal I went home a different way (getting used to my surroundings) taking in what was around making mental notes of places I wanted to check out at a later time and just as I was ready to turn onto the tiny street that lead to my guesthouse, just to my right there was a storefront with big letters, "Magic". The shop was actually a stone throw away from where I lived.
I popped in and introduced myself meeting a kind man named Poon. Having a great vibe I came back a few days later to start the artwork. I describe what I wanted....a sleeve adding nature with the two polar bears that I had. He took many photos of my arm. I mentioned that I want the night moon, waterfall, stream, etc... He got on the computer and started to do his thing. I was really impressed with what he was doing on the computer and knew that I had the right person.
We schedule the rest of the sessions which was a total of eight hours of work for three sittings. It worked out very well.
Even before the work was completed I receive many compliments on it. I really like watching as we progressed through the several stages. By the time we were done it was just about time for me to leave and I was low on money but wanted to give him a generous tip. I extended an offer to practice massage with him, specifically Tok-Sen. He accepted being the first person outside of class that I've worked on with this modality!
I have found another friend in Thailand through this experience and certainly will come to visit with him (and maybe more tattoo work) during my next trip. It was a pleasure to connect with Poon and glad our paths crossed!

Patara Elephant Farm Visit: Photo Gallery

The Elephant Owner for a day is done in English by the farm owner and professional elephant trainers. Go and have a wonderful time with the healthy and happy elephants, their babies, and bull breeder elephants. I had an amazing time and I am sure if you allow yourself to be open you will too.

It's cool if you bring your camera but they take many wonderful photos and give you a CD besides the less you bring the better. I brought a small backpack and the elephant handler and van keep pack as we continued from one staging area to another.

During my stay in Thailand I had two different Elephant experiences, one I previously wrote about. There are several different type of outfits that have elephant things and many are catered for the tourist. There was a major differences in both times that I had. I have learn of another place called The Elephant Nature Park which I plan to volunteer at the end of the year when I return to Thailand. Just like many outfits Patara Elephant Farm picked me up early in the morning and we drove out about a half hour to their spread. They are well organized and made the day very interesting, fun, and educational. The name of the program that I did is called "Elephant Owner for a Day". It was a very intense experience that actually brought tears to my eyes! In this unique experience I learned how to hike, track and approach the elephant. I walked, fed, bathe, and brush this majestic animal in the river.

I was trained on how to ride on her neck using many different techniques and went on a long bare-back adventure ride to a waterfall where we rested and had a wonderful buffet, Thai style!
Patara Elephant Farm has a higher standard in the care of their elephants than many other camps/farms. They are quoted of saying "Our elephants have been rescued from unsuitable working conditions and the proceeds from this trip help keep them in a natural environment for breeding program".

Thailand Experience!

My time in Thailand has been the single most powerful life experience that I have ever processed. Many wonderful moments that I will treasure for a lifetime. Just as with many things we don't fully appreciate our processes until after the fact. Although I was being present most of the time and reflecting on what my mentor mentioned to me (Breathe and experience) while I was there I can't help but to think how could I have made the time there more. I guess I should lighten up on myself because it was an amazing journey and I have many treasured memories.
The transition back to my life here in the USA has been the most difficult out of all my travels. It has been more that just a vacation!
It is great though that I can think of my time there or of a situation and I either chuckle or just feel a deep sensation. It was fantastic meeting all kinds of people, not only the locals but also many travelers from all over the world. My life is deeply enriched!

I have a few more things and photos to share of my time there and will get around to it.

Cooking Schools

During my time in Chiangmai, Thailand I went to three different cooking schools each having their own qualities! Most of these types of cooking schools offer 1/2 and full day courses in most cases, everyday. These were lots of fun and can fit into most peoples schedules. There are also schools that offer 40 hour and more classes and that is one of the things I will be doing on my next visit.

The last cooking class I went to was at "Siam Rice" as with all of them they picked me up at my guesthouse and we stopped at the market. We went to the site where we started in on the cooking. I notice that over my time in Thailand I take more heat (the first school I put 1-2 chilies in my dishes now can put up to 4-5). There are so many curry variations but they can come from just 3 or so bases. I like every curry that I have tried and I lean more towards the red curries. My favorite part at all the schools was learning to mortar curry paste. Nancy was a really nice lady. The vegetable carving time was neat and this really makes a difference in presentation. We used a slice of potato for the leaf and a chunk of carrot for the flower. Pretty good for the first time. Also I like that they gave us certificates.

At each of these, I had a great experience. The one that stands out most in my mind is Asian Scenic. I felt the most comfortable there and had lots of laughs. Our cook was sweet, funny, and informative. They were very clean and kept our cooking and eating area clear without me even noticing. They also provided us with a beautiful cookbook, nice presentation. This is my top pick and would go again. At the Organic Thai Farm the market time was great. Our host provided us with lots of information and he knew his stuff. When we got to the Farm I was really impressed with the garden and the kitchen work area. We did have to clean up some of our things here and our cook was on the serious side but I do like that he would lighten it up at the end of a cooking segment and say "while you cooking...have a smile". Also got a cookbook here that is easy to understand. This was the farthest out with the ride being quite bumpy but I enjoyed the scenery. I liked Siam Rice too. The family was friendly and kind. In between dishes we stopped to do some vegetable carving. Still waiting for the online cookbook. This is a new outfit but I think if they work at it they can be among the top.

While in Bangkok did not have Internet connection. I stayed at the Baiyoke Sky Hotel and would have to pay extra to get online. This was a great chance for me to unwind. I had an interesting time the last few days in Thailand. Had a contact that connected me with Mr Tammy that I used his driving services for a day in which I was able to accomplish and see many things. It was nice to have someone there when I needed. It made this time easier and his kindness was greatly appreciated.
My flight back to the USA left at 5:50am on Friday morning with a plane change in Japan and then another once at LAX. Still making some adjustments especially with the sleeping part.
There are some other things that I will write about and other things that I probably won't/can't. Everything that I experienced has impacted me and my life on some level or another. Some things I would say hit me immediately and yet others are still unfolding as I write this.

Last week I completed the massage courses that I came to do on this trip. I am grateful for a comfortable and nurturing environment to have studied in. Many thanks to all the teachers, student teachers, and students who were all part of this process.
I really enjoyed learning and practicing this beautiful form of Massage. Even though I took a variety of course they are related and can be used together for healing (as with many other modalities). My course work consisted of Thai Massage Level 1 and 2, Herbal Compress, Foot Reflexology, and my favorite, Tok-Sen. I will be coming back to further my studies.
I am really appreciative for my interest in Bodywork for that is what brought me to Chiangmai in the first place but I got so much more on many levels so much so that the intensity of what I experienced in the last few weeks I can't even write about and perhaps can't really talk about either for there are "no words". It is an experiential thing!!!!

Amazing Service in Chiang Mai (part 2)

In between my two dentist appointments today (the cleaning was at 4pm and the filling at 7pm) I stopped at an optical shop at 130 Thapae Rd. Tel: 0-5323-2156 asking how much for an exam and to look at some eyeglasses.
I have several pairs now but not with updated prescriptions. Before leaving the states I did get an eye exam going in with the impression that the exam would be at no charge. Even though I don't get vision with my benefits working with the city they did cover the exams in previous years but did not discover until afterwards that it was no longer covered. I had to fork out almost $100 bucks.
When I went into Top Charoen Optical I was greeted with lovely smiles and a glass of Orange Juice with a piece of Orchid as decoration, boy what class! I never experienced this in the states and many times people did not seem like they were very much interested in helping me. Again the level of service was wonderful and the price for the glasses and getting the transitional lens was a fraction of the cost I would pay back in California.
The level of respect they shown was mutual and I wanted to do business with them. There was no pressure and it made my decision process easy. I found a nice pair that I like and placed the order. I will be coming back when I return to Chiang Mai. Many thanks to the friendly staff at Top Charoen Optical.

Amazing Service in Chiang Mai (part 1)

I was walking down the street yesterday and notice a dental office (Dental4U Clinic) with a sign outside with some rates of the services they provide so I popped in to inquire about a cleaning and found the prices a fraction of the cost in the USA, particularly in California.
Some may be thinking why would you need to get dental work in Thailand when you have benefits working for the City of San Diego? Many people are under the illusion that working for the City we get great benefits....wrong! Actually we get a skeleton medical plan and in fact if you look closely there have been many changes even in the plan that I have but certainly no dental or vision.
I was not completely honest with dentist today when she asked me when I was last at a dentist office, I told her 5 years but actually it has been 10 years and I was embarrassed to say. I've been wanting to go see a dentist for a few years now and would look at ads trying to figure out where to go at a minimum cost. My previous dentist experiences were not positive and they always seem to need to do all this work. They are suppose to be the experts and they have out teeth in their hands.
The people here were very kind and gentle. They were committed in making me comfortable. All the noise freaked me out but I would have that wherever I go. They did an exam and proceeded with the cleaning. After the cleaning the comforting woman explained for my age my teeth are in good shape and I would need one filling. I've been in the fear for not going to the dentist in all these years that I would need more extensive work, so I was really relieved. For the cleaning it was 600baht and the filling was another 800baht (a total of about $45 USD).

Intense Thai Massage Work Today!

Gotten quite a few massages in Thailand. Most places that I've been were good and for the price you can't beat it. Have not had a bad one since I've been here and today WOW!
During the Thai Professional Class I was worked on by two student teachers who really put it on me. Both had their own special qualities. My friend Zulu gave me some fantastic heavy work. He has been very good for me and my development to give me great feedback. The first week I took classes one of the things is when we connect with the client we asked do you want soft, medium, or Hard. After a few days working with Zulu and in my practicing he says he wants more so I have added another level....soft, medium, hard, or Zulu? This guy is extremely flexible and likes strong pressure. I just need to scale back some when I work on others. I was so wiped out after he worked on me. There was time left in class but I did not have anything in me to practice so another student teacher used me as an example and he brought another quality which was amazing. After both these guys worked on me I felt like spaghetti. Keep in mind I am a large student especially compared to most who come through this process. I am grateful for such an incredible experience. I know at these massage places if they worked like these guys did all day they could not last in the business.

My Five Wives!!!!!

So many wives, how do I keep track? Just kidding! Last night I joined one of our teacher's from The School of Massage and Health and some of my fellow students. We went to the Night Safari at the Chiang Mai Zoo. It was great to spend time with them and I had so much fun hanging out. The teacher was joking speaking of my Five Wives. Of course I enjoy the attention that I got from them and all the other people around who seem to get a kick from the great time we were having. The best part of the Night Safari for me was the light show later in the night. The grounds were very beautiful and I loved the landscape. As we entered there was a small circus type elephant doing tricks and seemed to make people happy which that part is okay but after my experience at the Patara Elephant Farm and everything I learned there it was a little troubling for me to see. Perhaps if I did not go to the Farm last week I would not feel this way. Besides that I enjoy checking out the flowers, the structure and how informative the rides were through the park. We went during the English version. What a cool evening of fun and laughter. The only thing is at the end of the night my wives booted me out. Just teasing, I love these special women and they made my evening very nice.

A Visit to the Baan Kingkaew Orphanage

I had the wonderful privilege to visit the Baan Kingkaew Orphanage today. In my short visit I was moved at how happy many of the children were. Just to see their beautiful smiles was very special! No need for me to say too much on this and I wanted to just provide a short share for my readers. I had the opportunity to connect with the kids from three different groups and even got a hug, played a few minutes, and was able to feed one child. I really liked how clean the place was and you can tell the team there really care for these children. The grounds are well taken care of and the facility seems very organized. I am proud to have shared just a moment with them and upon my return to Thailand will come to help out however I can if they allow me.

Tok-Sen...Day 3

My third evening of this unique and special form of bodywork. I am really excited about it for many reasons. I would say the chief thing is that it feels so natural for me. It requires a certain level of rhythm and flow. I believe it has been easier for me to pick up and learn than both Thai Massage and Foot Massage. I do enjoy it all and with Tok-Sen we do use Thai Massage to warm up the body and the same with the Thai Foot Massage so both do solidify my Thai work. I really like the way that my instructor teaches me. She first has one of the Teacher trainees to model and some have not even received the work before. Then she does it on me and then I practice on her for the immediate feedback. It is awesome to have this one on one training of this very special work. The first evening she explained some things to me about the ritual of it with the symbolism of the color of flowers and where the wood comes from which I found very interesting. I did realized that it is very specific for this region and even then many people don't even know about it. The reason that I know this and it was confirmed because on my way home tonight I stopped for a quick 1hour Thai Massage at a place I've been wanting to go for sometime and I had a little chat with the practitioner and she had no clue. A few of her colleagues were giving sessions and was wondering about the tools and the techniques. I used the tools on them for a brief moment and they thought I was a teacher of this. When I went downstairs where they were doing foot massage I asked them if they ever heard of it and out of the 3 people working only one older lady had heard about it. I was really surprised.

I am extremely honored to be taught this and to connect with it on a deeper level. I am moved!!!

Letting Go Even More of Attachment

Boo hoo!!!! Got my haircut today. This was a major step for me. So, I was thinking back at the last time I had it this short. The first thought was when I join the Navy and went to boot camp but it still was longer then. So, the next thought was when I shaved it off back in 1975, yeah that's it, just a little longer than that. I can safely say many people that know me has never seen my hair cut this short. The lady who cuts my hair in the states I've been seeing for nearly 18 years I think. She knows how I like my hair cut and even when I say short it is not the short that most people think. The last haircut that I had was over a month before I came to Thailand so that makes it at least 2 months without one. I usually don't go more than 5 weeks without one. I was going to try and hold out for when I return in a few weeks but it has gotten out of control. When I take a shower and put in some of my hair care product it gets me by most of the morning but by the afternoon it is almost like I stuck my finger in a light socket. So after my Tok-Sen class this evening I stopped at a little place across the street from the school.
I started to try and communicate with her what I wanted but could not quite express my needs so I decided to breathe and experience (like my friend Rick reminds me of) so sitting in the chair she started to go to town and boy did she. At moments I began to get nervous because my beautiful locks were getting chopped off. The feeling I had is when I had my dreadlocks cut back in 1986 for those of you that remember.

When she was finish cutting and I had the shampoo I actually like it. It is very different for me. A funny feeling came over me because I never would imagine that I would ever cut my hair this short and I'm sure that if I could communicate with this nice lady I would not have had this cut and certainly would not have been present of how attached I've been over my hair. The thing is it can grow back if I choose to and either way will be fine. It was cool as I was walking home because some of the people that I come across enroute saw me made a gesture about my head and gave me a nod or the thumbs up!!!

I do see having it this short will save me a bundle of money in hair care products which I do spend a bundle with a variety of products from a special organic shampoo, several type of conditioners, balms, gels, and cremes.

Feeling Healthy!!!

Another kind person that I met is the lady that does my laundry. Not only is she nice but she does a great job in cleaning my clothes. I had to have the pants that I've brought with me taken in which she has accommodated me. My clothes smell so good. I would love to have someone like that back in the states to take care of my clothes like this. I stop to say hello to her and her family almost daily because her home/shop is close by where I live. She has invited me to have dinner with them on a few occasions.
Regarding my jeans I gave them away because they were just not worth having them taken in. They were already baggy as it was. The Thai gentleman and I had a chuckle because he says he can have two pair made. Even my shirts are too big and baggy. Before leaving I was wearing XXXL and I did buy a Polar Bear tee shirt that was XXL and was too small but now is more than comfortable and now is feeling a little loose on me. Good Stuff!!!!! Thai life has been good for me. It took me coming here to really start to honor who I am and to release things that I've hold on for many years. I am FREE!!!!
Now I am really excited because I am having some clothes made. More for just running around and when I do bodywork but I am also going to have a really nice outfit made before returning to California. I saw the perfect material and I hope the lady that is doing my clothes will be able to find the same stuff!!!

Another Layer in my Bodywork Experience!

This week as I've mentioned I started a Foot Massage Course. Afterwards I meet with Master Teacher studying an amazing healing process called Tok-Sen. I read about the course prior to coming here and knew I wanted to experience it without really knowing what it is all about. I am absolutely amazed at how wonderful receiving and giving this work is. This evening was my second session of learning, practice, and feeling the work.
The warm up of the body is with some of the Thai Massage principles then using the tools mostly on the energy lines we provide an incredible relaxing experience. I am proud to say that I seem to pick it up right away and it feels so right. It is my favorite type of bodywork to do and receive. When they tell me that it is only in Chiang Mai, I say and now in San Diego, California USA. If anyone who reads this has studied this and is willing to do trades...shoot me an email.

I am so blessed to love and to be loved so. Being in Thailand has warmed my heart and soul in a way as never before. The Thai people have been so friendly and kind to me. This includes most everyone I come in contact with. My precious instructors at School of Massage and Health, my laundry lady, the folks where I stay, the places that I eat, the people that pummel my body with massage, my tattoo artist, the master silversmith, all the friendly faces I see as I wander the streets of Chiang Mai, and just about anyone that I extend a smile to I get one back. Especially the young children that I see and laugh with. For the intensity in the love I have for people I want to extend my many thanks to these beautiful people here that has shown me that it is possible to love so, genuine LOVE. I now can hold these experiences in my heart.
Prior to coming here, if I would smile at someone or wave hello with no response I would allow myself to be upset and would say things to myself that was unhealthy. People are who they are and I no longer have this high expectations of others. If I extend greetings without a return gesture it is okay because the love in my heart is stronger than that and it does not change how I feel about my fellow man. I am free!!!!

Herbal Compress

On Saturday I took an incredible course called Herbal Compress.

Walking around in the city I see many places offer herbal massage. I had no clue what it was. My thought was that it was like circulatory (Swedish) kinda like aroma therapy but with herbs....I was wrong.

Our wonderful Master teacher taught us about the herbs and how they can help the body. We learned about fresh and dried herbs. We made up our own herbal balls one in dry form then another fresh for our session practice. I was really impressed with the varied uses of herbs in healing the body of many different ailments.

After lunch we began treatment. We practiced and studied how to apply the herbs to the body and found the warmth of this process very comforting. I also like this treatment because I can use it on the Elderly as well as people that are not as receptive to touch as with other forms of bodywork.What a wonderful treat (to add to the many treats that I've experienced in Chiang Mai).

Playing Petanque with the Locals

On Friday on my way home I took the back streets and notice some people playing my favorite outdoor game, Petanque. As I observed they waved me over so I did. It was very special and even though they did not speak English it was really great to connect again with locals and have a fun time with them. The woman I call Mama could count in English and she said friend. It is a family and a few friends who made up a court. I came back the next day after my herbal class to play a bit longer. I would like to spend more time with them however my time now is becoming very limited and my principle focus at this time is to complete my Massage education. Thank you Thai people for making me feel comfortable and showing such warmth. I love you!!!

Jewelry Making Course...Day 2

Last Friday I attended another Jewelry Making Course. I wanted to try and make a ring for something different. I am not a ring guy but I thought the experience would be valuable and it truly was.

I started off with a design that I could implement several techniques. The process of creating a design was not the challenge it is when the instructor told me that I would have to use math. The first reaction was shocked because I did not even consider that and it seemed that I reverted back to my troubling times during school and instantly had those feelings of lack and I was not a good student as my classmates. Then a touch of fear had set in and I began to felt helpless. The gentle Master Thai teacher helped me through this part of it with the calculations. When I was growing up after the experience I had regarding my mother many teachers avoided me like I was a plague so that had compounded my feelings of inadequacies. The growth continues and it affirmed within me the importance of my life's work with the Kidz Hearts Foundation.

Anyways the magic started and I turned a piece of silver into a part of my creative process. The experience is unmeasurable as much of my experiences here in Chiang Mai, Thailand.

Went to Prison

I knew that would catch your attention;)

One of the different things that I wanted to experience was to get a massage at the Chiang Mai's Women's Prison. The facility across from the Correctional center has a spa and gift shop. I walked in where a guard directed me to the room where I changed into fisherman's pants and a top. I put my personal things into a locker and laid on the mat getting ready for an experience in which I had no idea of what to expect. This Thai woman started to work on me and I was immediately impressed and have to say it probably was the best Thai massage I ever received. At the end of the session I was offered a cup of lemon grass tea and really took in the sensation of this nice Thai Massage session.

What I understand from talking with the guard and what I read in the guide books is that the money that is made goes to the these women who are about to be realeased within 6 months in which they are able to have a savings when released. These are not harden criminals. I refered to "Lonely Planet". Some of the information is a little outdated. A 1hr Thai massage is actually 180baht (almost $6 USD) and the hours are from 9am-4pm. They also do foot massage but not Herbal like the book says.

In trying to encourage others to try it out I get all kinds of reactions. It is okay though I cannot expect people to be open to this kind of experience but I do think that people need to get out of their head and their preceived ideas not only of this but anything in their lives. How do you know if you don't try? What is getting in your way?

Great Eats III and a Personal Share!

This last Saturday I was guided to have lunch at this nice place "Yoga" restaurant. When I walked in I felt a wonderful vibe. It is a very charming place with great people. It was nice speaking and connecting with them. You can tell this woman is very loving and sweet. I had the red curry with brown rice. You can really tell the food came from the heart and with love. I am honored to have been drawn here and continue to meet wonderful people from all over the world.

Side note:

It is really profound for me that I am at a place that I am not even recognizing myself and as each day unfolds and I delve a little deeper into my experiences and have greater insights into who I am and who I want to be in the world, how can I be who I was before coming here? I have stretched so much that there will be major changes in not only my lifestyle but also in the way that I experience my world......a major step will be in the way of the employment that I do for income, Parking Enforcement. I will continue my life's work (the Kidz Hearts Foundation), my work of passion (massage), my work of Joy (providing wonderful gift baskets for all occasions) but also expand myself and work experience by attracting the perfect work for me.

Foot Massage Course

First day of Thai Foot Massage course. It is much more that I thought it would be. I have always given great foot massages mostly intuitively and got better with the various massage classes and much practice over the years.
The course is a week long and we covered many techniques today that actually amazed me. I first thought, we need a full week just to learn foot massage? There really is much more to it than one would think. It is wonderful when you let go of "What you know that you know" and take it in. I still at times get a little frustrated because I want the flow to happen immediately but I have to take a step back and realize that I am learning something new. Just because I have studied and practice massage nearly 17 years and I have a wonderful flow in my current practice does not mean I have to hold myself to this perceived higher expectation of myself. I know that I have quality in my touch and I am reminded of that when I put my hands on people. This process of learning many wonderful techniques has revealed a deeper quality of who I am and a wonderful sense of my experience of the "NOW".

My teacher is a wonderful, warm, and nurturing person. I really like her and she has adds a fun way of learning. I appreciate her patience with me.

Great Eats II

Lucky me! I have found my favorite spot to eat which is called Ratana's. I really like it because they have several of my favorite dishes. All places don't have the same selections. For example one of my favorite dishes is called "khao soi". It is a vegetable (or chicken) curry dish that is from Northern Thailand that is absolutely Delicious. They use a special noodle that many places don't have. Also they have other wonderful selections of Northern Thai Cuisine. The prices are great and both locations the people are cool.
I first found the one near the jewelry school and accidentally found the one that is closer to home.

Street Markets in Chiang Mai

There are several Street Markets in Chiang Mai where you can find a variety of things. You have to be prepared to haggle for the best price and actually they expect it.
When they have these markets they block off the streets and you see all kinds of vendors. The first two that I went to was the Sunday Street Market and the Night Bazaar. All I did was checked it out. There were a few items just for the fun of it did some bargaining with the merchant but end up not purchasing anything. Both of these are well worth checking out and a great opportunity for people watching.
But you cannot miss the Saturday market. I went last night and found it the best. It is not as well know as the previous two but you find the best deals. I think the reason for this is because it is more gear to the Thai people. I would say about 80-90% of the people were Thai. I like it better too because the prices are already lower so you don't have to negotiate as much. I end up getting a shirt (which I really like) and 3 pair of the Thailand pants all for 500baht ($15 USD). The merchant was a cool soft spoken Thai man. The energy here was welcoming and made it comfortable. The street is much more crowded I would say but what a wonderful way to connect to folks. I had fun talking to all kinds of people and they were receptive.
The other two are much closer to me but the Saturday one is my favorite.

Another Fantastic Day....

and it is not over yet. It is just after 5:30pm in this wonderful city of Chiang Mai. Started the day by getting a Thai Massage then on to Jewelry making class. On my way home I stopped for another massage, this time Swedish for a change...but I really like the Thai modality. As I continued to walk home after session in one of the small back streets I notice some locals playing Petanque. They had made up a small court and even had the mama out there. They waved me over so I stopped to watch and actually I played for a few, how neat!!! They did not speak any English but I understand that they are playing tomorrow so after my Herbal class I will come back. Made it to the pad to unwind for a few then on to continue the artwork on my polar bear sleeve with Poon at Magic Tattoo. I am really happy with the progress.
I am very much in the zone and making the most of each and every moment! The energy is strong and my consciousness is heighten thereby I am open to the many gifts that comes my way in many forms. I am appreciative for it all!!!

You can find all kinds of things to eat in Chiang Mai, Thailand. Of course I mostly eat Thai food which I really enjoy. Even when I eat in Thai restaurants in the States it is just not the same. Eating different Thai food can be as complex or as simple as you like. I can say for sure I have never eaten this delicious array of choices back home and really enjoy the opportunity to explore and delight my taste buds.
When I go to massage school I eat at a vegetarian restaurant that I really like and the food is very inexpensive. There are many restaurants for slightly more you can have seafood and meat items. The best place I've found have been non deliberate (no accidents!). There is a place I had lunch yesterday that was absolutely incredible and I feasted on Northern Thai cuisine for around six bucks and that is splurging for me.
You can go to any of the markets and you can find all kinds of things to eat. Also around the shopping areas you will see all kinds of stands for a wide range of things to munch on.
Even for those not adventurous you can get a roasted chicken at a stand for 100baht (about 3 bucks). There are also places that are western.....like hamburger stands, taco shops, pizza joints, etc...
One late night I did have a chicken burrito from a place where the guy is from California and I have to say YUCK!!! It could be I am spoiled on Thai food.
Of course my favorite culinary delights is attending cooking schools to learn how to prepare many of these dishes (particularly the local stuff) and have several meals from the process. Many of these classes are around 900baht ($27). Since I enjoy cooking these creative moments are great for me.
As you can see there are plenty of options which makes the travels even that more enriched.

Jewelry Making Course...Day 1

Another incredible day! Took a few days off from my Thai Massage Training and went to a jewelry making course. I am taking two days in this shift of experience. What a wonderful way to express and explore my creativity! Actually I am quite amazed at the results.

Class started at 10:30am so had the chance to take it a little slow this morning, boy did I need it after the first 30 hours of Thai Massage courses. I met my instructor Nugoon who is a master silver smith and jeweler. A remarkable man who is talented beyond measure. I am appreciative to work with him. What made it even more special is that I was the only student today so I received his direct attention and guidance.

So I popped into class not knowing what to expect. What I had in mind was to do something with the polar bear but when he said I had to do the drawing and design I was lost. I remembered what my dear friend and mentor Rick reminds me.....Breathe and Experience! So I did!!!
Once I did the creative juices started to flow. Of course there had to be a HEART to represent my big heart and my love for people and the planet. It took a few drawings to get to where my heart was taking me. Even once my design was done I did modify it as I worked with the material (silver).

I had to flow and trust in the process because when my head tried to understand how it possibly was going to happen the creative juice faucet was closing, so to let the flow happen I had to release the stories, self-evaluations, and self-criticism. When I was in the zone there was no limit.

I learned the basics in preparing the metal, working with a vast array of tools, and the soldering.
My instructor was absolutely incredible and very knowledgeable working with the tools and materials. His patience with me and my process was comforting and supportive. The course end up being about 6 hours and the cost was 1100baht course/just over 300baht for material ($33/$10). What is really cool is that they offer a week long course where you learn a variety of techniques or you can just take one class. To do gem setting you need at least 3 days and my time is so precious, that it will not work on this trip.

It was a pleasure to use a variety of techniques to create my piece. I could have made it simpler but why? More complex I would have to go another day just to complete it. I am taking another class tomorrow and I want to learn how to make a ring. I will be more prepared for I will work on my design tonight.
NOVA has a Contemporary Jewelry Store on Thapae Rd and the lab is a few blocks away. You can find many nice pieces at the shop and this is where I signed up for the course. During my lunch break I went in to say hello and what a great time I was having in the class. They asked me to bring my piece in for them to see when I was done. After the course I did do so and I appreciate their reactions.

Something about my piece. On the bottom where you see the indentations represents the challenges and limitations (self-imposed or otherwise) that I've experienced in my life. The cut out represents a river and by crossing it leaving behind the baggage allows me to be who I really am with the abundance of LOVE in my heart and to expand that love unto the world which the dome shape symbolizes. Now, my interpretation of this piece may expand as I am present to it!

Be Safe

This is what many people said to me before I left the states and I still get emails that express this. In my travels over the course of my life I have encountered some intense moments especially during my backpack days in Europe. Also when I was younger traveling by Greyhound bus to see my Uncle in Los Angeles was not always a pleasant moment.

I know that most people do care and really want me to be safe but I have to say I feel more safe here than ANYWHERE I have been in the world. The people here for the most part are friendly and more than kind.

Perhaps I am the funny American that gets reactions from many people and it is always fun loving. On my route to school I see some of the same people and although I just know how to say hello and thank you there is a level of respect from the Thai people that I've never experienced in my 51 years here.

Peeling Another Layer!

Sometimes we have insights within ourselves that moves deep to our core and when we allow it we can truly grow and expand.

This morning I had a challenging time getting up and I can say since my initial arrival the first time that I felt tired. I skipped yoga this morning and made the walk to school a little later than usual. This was day 5 of the Thai Massage Foundation Intensive and boy am I feeling it. As I was preparing to go into class I realized how sore my legs are. For the previous days all that floor work and moving my body in ways that I have not experienced in quite sometime.

The previous four days we covered all the material for this section of my training so it was a day of practice and taking my examination. The instructors and students alike have been extremely helpful and I really enjoy my conversations with them. I have had some great talks with a wonderful spirit who is inspiring. It has been a great exchange of energy!

I was sharing with her how I really am getting how attached I've been and seeing that I am letting go. The example I shared was in regards of my shoes. In Thailand many places you go you take your shoes off before entering. Now I did get myself some sandals but after that first day of walking to school I got a sore on one of my toes so I've been wearing the Clark's that I got when I was in Amsterdam last year. I did pay good money for them. I had the thought of what if I leave these shoes out and someone takes them. It hit me like I ran into a brick wall.....so what? Does this define who I am as a person? Does what I have or the way I think about things define my experience. I suggest no. Being present in every moment and experience the richness of what is without attachment. In the attachments we become slaves to our interpretations. If we let go and experience what is we truly will know ourselves, our REAL SELF! Not the illusion or where our limiting thoughts take us.

Previously I had mentioned how I really wanted that A+ in my course. As I thought about it something just wasn't right and I was with that today and there was the breakthrough. I took the examination this afternoon and was being present to the session but there was a part of me that was caught up with that damn A+.....do you see what I mean? We have to be willing to let go. Well I did not get the A+. It had nothing to do with my evaluator for she is a very sweet and supportive person. She did give we some great feedback which was extremely valuable. My initial thoughts were not supportive of being present with what is and a part of me was not happy about it. Now why would I allow myself to be disturb by this? I am in a beautiful country meeting beautiful people and having the time of my life. Does an A+ define who I am? After a conversation I had today I saw where my attachment was coming from. The attachment to my educational experience during my troubled days after the lost of my mother and not doing well in school feeling inferior to the other children.

This day has been a major breakthrough for me. I am still feeling a shift as I write this and suspect that there will be a continual unfolding from this moment in my life!

After the class, even through I was exhausted I went for a Thai Massage. How appropriate. Most of our work was on my legs and I did not say a word!

I am thankful for all who have crossed my path and for those lives that I am able to touch in some way.

Powerful Work!

Last night went to check out the Sunday Walking Market. Lots of nice colors at the variety of vendors, street food, and rows and rows of chairs where practitioners where giving foot massages. I never seen so many people getting any kind of massage at one time. This area was packed. I wandered around for about a hour just to check things out. They are open to midnight.

Got a fantastic night sleep!!!

I had the great pleasure and treat to get one on one with the master teacher today. Working with her confirmed my gift of touch. We covered a lot of material today and will have my first exam on Wednesday. I am striving for an "A+" which is above 95. Several students who are in a group before me shared that they got 94's which is an "A", so we will see. I will stay present, breath, study, and practice. I do have willing subjects. Learning this modality has taken me to a whole other level. Her feedback was great and I learned so much. I am truly blessed to have come to this school. During a break I did some TuiNa on her, some Sensory Repatterning on a student teacher and just connected with some of the wonderful students.

In my 17 years of learning I have combined and blended a variety of modalities to make up my sessions. Now that I am really getting into this Thai Massage thing we will have to see which direction my work goes. I am really feeling the power of this amazing work and would say much of my training to date has prepared me for this portion of my journey.

I was observing an advance student practicing points which may be a little confusing for me with my background in Tuina for the number and name of the points seem to be different. If you have any feedback Skip or Rick I am open.
After working with my teacher today I am inspired to come back and do teacher training with her if she will accept me.

My body is changing. The weight is coming off much easier without much conscious effort. Left two pair of pants with my laundry lady today to take in (these were the smallest pants that I had before leaving the states, so it will definitely time for new clothes when or if ; ) I return to the states). I am eating healthier and most days I eat a vegetarian diet. Today's special at the restaurant I went to was stir fry Kale w/mushrooms and rice, absolutely delicious. I have not had any Thai food I do not like yet...even panang which the curry paste has ground peanuts which I have had issues with before now. I still asked for no peanuts on top but will eat the curry.

Game plan for the week two more days of Thai massage class then on Thursday and Friday going to my Jewelry making course, Herbal compress class on Saturday, Sunday go play with the Elephants all day then start level II Thai course.

By Far The Most Incredible Adventure I've been on in my Life!

To be honest everyone I can't do justice of this one in the words that I express in this blog but I will certainly do my best. The adventure that I was on last Saturday was the single most exhilarating and powerful outdoor thing I have ever done. I was introduced to a place that sets up a variety of outing experiences that has something for everyone (and believe me there are many of these outfits but I was drawn to this one....there are no accidents). I decided to take a one day trek which was absolutely amazing and met a incredible Thai woman who was our guide. She is extremely knowledgeable and passionate at what she does. Her smile and kindness added to this very nurturing and intense lifetime experience.

We started on the road about 8am leaving just across from where I am living at the moment in a nice 4x4 vehicle (many of the other outfits have outdated vehicles that makes for a miserable ride), great touch! All the time we were on the road she provided us with all kinds of information about the areas and answered our questions. It was really cool too because I gave her my camera and she did a wonderful job at capturing many of the images. Thank You my friend!!!!

Our first stop was at an Elephant farm where we had the opportunity to ride in baskets on the elephant with a Mahoot (actually next week I am taking a one day course in Mahoot training which I will share with you at that time). The ride was just under an hour where we rode in the thick brush and ending by riding through a river bed, how cool. I bought a few bags of bananas to feed the elephant for 40 baht and that was not enough. Elephants can really put it away! My Mahoot was a wonderful Thai woman who answered all my questions and if you look into it you probably won't hear too much about women doing this. There was a young boy who was the mahoot for the couple that was with us. He was such a cute kid!

Afterwards we headed to a Karen Tribe Village. I was really moved by these people. They were making beautiful works and our beautiful guide communicated with them and explained many things to us. I felt privileged to have been in their presence. At one point we came to one of the homes where there was a beautiful baby with his grandfather, very special stuff. We walked down where people were working near the rice fields. A wonderful lady allowed me to take a photo of her. While we were walking around our guide explained many of the local plants and some of the uses for them especially the healing aspects.

We then went to Maewang Waterfall where I went for a swim. It was cool to swim in some of the power of the fall. Walking along the bamboo was a little scary because it was not wide and being a big fella it was not easy but my guide was great at getting me through it.

The next stop was the Bamboo River Rafting where we went down a river on bamboo that is tied together with shreds of bamboo. I really liked it and had fun helping the guy who was taking us down with the flow of the river and even hit a few rapids.

At the staging area our guide and driver picked us up and drove us to a local area where we had a delicious dish of worms. Boy, they sure was tasty!!! Just kidding, I couldn't tell you because I did not indulge. I did egg on people though. There were some people close by from Poland so I walked over there getting them to try the worms taking photos. Actually I was able to convince them to try it, am I a salesman or what? Most of them actually did eat some. We did have a wonderful meal of veggies, curry dish, of course rice and fresh fruit for dessert. Our beautiful guide really made sure I was well taken care of. I say this because the seats that they had would not accommodate me so she went in and got something comfortable for me to sit on. I was really moved of how attentive this sweet lady was and looked out for me on the whole trip.

The feature of the trip was heading up to the peak of the highest mountain in Thailand, Doi Inthanon. We saw another waterfall just off the road along the way. What a breathtaking ride. We stopped at The Great Holy Relics Pagoda of Nabhamethanidol - Nabhapolbhumisiri. All I can say about this part is WOW! The most amazing site that I have ever seen. We hung out there for a while checking out both sides for the King and Queen. Again I really enjoyed connecting with some Thai people. It has really been easy for me to start talking with them and most speak some English and even when they didn't we shared a smile and took photos together.

We continued the ride to the peak where we had the chance to walk around at the top of the summit. Incredible!!!! The sun was just about ready to set, I have not seen a more beautiful sight in my life. As we were heading back down to the vehicle there was a couple of gentlemen that was enjoying a glass of wine who was with another tour group and of course like many times I struck up a conversation with them. They said if you join our tour we give you wine with the trip and I said but they wouldn't have this special Thai women as our guide. I would not trade her in for any other. However they did share a glass with me to take anyways. One guy also spoke some French so I shared a few words and laughs with him as I walked on with my small group. As we continued to walk just to the right someone notice a trail by the name of Aang-Ka (Michael trail....how about that?).

Made it to the vehicle just as it turned dark. We were heading back when at the last minute our fantastic guide had the driver to pull close to the giant waterfall. We could not really see it well and certainly could not take the photos. She was so apologetic but I told her no need because for me just to be in the presence of this MAGNIFICENT Waterfall was extremely intense. Matter of fact I stopped to do a few moments of Qi-Gong really taking it in!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

So we were back on the road. Our guide was so sweet that before we got back into Chiang Mai they pulled over and she went into a shop and bought us sandwiches. You really can tell that she has such a big heart and I find her to be such a very special person. I am very happy to have met her. After we got back to the guesthouse just over 12 hours later we shared wonderful conversation which just top it off for me.

Another WOW experience!!!!!!!!!!!

This is my second time going to cooking school in the few weeks that I have been here and I have to say each school has their own special way of presenting the recipes and with the students interactions. The first school was really cool just outside of Chiang Mai in a country setting and a wonderful kitchen. That instructor was a nice guy, kinda of serious but he would say frequently at the end of instructions......."Smile"! I did take away great things from that experience. After today's course I see it is great that I am taking cooking courses at different schools. I would not take the course at the Organic Thai Farm Cooking School again, however I would recommend to try it out. The Asia Scenic Cooking School I would take again and strongly encourage anyone who is interested in studying Thai cooking to go here. The teacher, Liu was incredible. She is fun loving and made the experience very personable. Her passion is obvious and her love of people was apparent.

This is a well organized school that offers all day, half day, and evening courses. The school has a variety of courses you can choose from to prepare.

They picked me up promptly this morning to take me to the school. We had a welcoming drink where our wonderful host spent a moment to learn our names and where we where from. Then we proceeded to the local market where she explained the noodle and rice section. She also talked some about tofu. Some of you knew how I felt about tofu but since I've been in Thailand I have actually starting to eat tofu (I would have never thought that would have been possible and believe me I have tried it many ways). We came back to the school where we learned about a variety of ingredients and had a tasty Thai thing where we folded a variety of things into some sort of leaf. The first one I made I put toooooooo much chili. I made a second one without.

I really like the process in the way we prepared the various dishes. It was really fun thanks to Liu. She was extremely patient and informative. We began to "Shake, Rattle, and Roll"! I feel like a master chef now....just teasing (I don't want any of you that I will be cooking for get your hopes up to much).

The wonderful people at Asia Scenic Cooking School where efficient in clearing things away as we prepared the next dish and was extremely friendly too. They made the cooking experience fun and very interesting. Thank you team, you are awesome. My friends here also took these photos for me which made it easier for me to focus on the cooking aspect. I am grateful and appreciative to them and the whole experience.
The dishes that I had a pleasure to prepare today was extensive. "Plat du Jour" consisted of Pad Thai, Spring Rolls, Hot Basil Stir Fry, and Tom Yum Soup. I also made a delicious local curry paste called Khaw Soi (I was very interested in this curry because I did not see it on other schools menus) and made the sauce then added the chicken (Yummy). My host tells me this is a Northern Thailand Curry and I should be able to find the ingredients at local Asian markets in my community. Finally, for dessert I prepared Deep Fried Bananas.

To top of the experience they gave us a really nice cookbook. The other school gave us a cookbook which was good but this one they really did a fantastic job and it really adds another level of Class.

I understand there are at least 20 cooking schools in the area but I believe you will be hard press to find one better. Thank you very much Asia Scenic. I strongly endorse and will encourage anyone to attend this wonderful course. A Five Star experience!!!!!!

Magnificent Loves the People of the Kingdom of Thailand

It is such an incredible experience in connecting with the people of the Kingdom of Thailand. I am getting opportunities to be with the all kinds of people from the city to the hill tribes and finding them to be kind and so thoughtful. I am really touched and honored for all of this.

When I was a young man it was difficult to share myself with others and I stayed in that dark place after my mother's murder for many years. I had not only built a wall but a fortress to keep people away. I have been fortunate to have a few close friends who did not let the tough exterior run them away and for that I am thankful, especially to two of my closest friends Gayle and Pauline. There are others but I have to say because of their love and what ever they saw in me helped in shifting my perception.

I have had wonderful experiences during my many travels in Europe but nothing like this. Looking into the eyes of the young to the old is warming me all over. I really feel a deep love and an appreciation for all the Thai people that have touched my life so far and all those who haven't. Needless to say this definitely will not be my last trip.

This was just a momentary share for I was ready to go to bed after I checked my emails and a quick look at facebook. I will blog of my amazing adventure of today, I hope in a few days.

Day 2 of Thai Massage Class

Great day of intense Thai Massage training. I really enjoy working closely with my wonderful teacher. She is so cool and gives fantastic feedback. As I previously mentioned the other two students with my are from Japan. My awesome instructor speaks Japanese to them and English to me.
After lunch I was chillin' in the courtyard listening to my ipod, jammin' to some Jean-Luc Ponty and she asked to listen. She is so cute and a really warm person. All the teachers are great and very warm hearted. It really adds a marvelous level to this experience.
I thought I had the route to school down pat but found myself going the opposite direction. It is the Old City and that moat that throws me off. After class I decided to skip getting a massage to make sure I found myself home referring to my map. Next week I should have no trouble since I know what direction to go.
If you never experience a Thai Massage you owe it to yourself to try it at least once and perhaps you'll get hooked. I feel so much more open and flexible. My body/mind feels amazing and it has brought another level of awareness.
Before class today (since I was not late) I join in my first Thai Yoga class at the school. It was pretty cool. I practice Yoga back in the 80's and some since but nothing like this. I don't know the name of it but boy what a wonderful way to open the body to prepare for the work.
I have a long day tomorrow with a trekking adventure so I am going to enjoy a Heineken and hit the sack.

Thai Massage from the Blind

During my class today a few students shared with me this place just up the street where the Blind do Thai massage. I decided to check it out. Wow!!!
A very small blind Thai woman twisted me all up. She was incredible and I was extremely impressed. I definitely will be going back not only for the magnificent Thai massage but also to support this visually impaired community.

Been Living High on the Hog!

When I first arrived in Thailand I was really surprised at how inexpensive things were. I did have a rough idea because of my research prior to coming. So when I only paid 400-500baht for a hour massage, 100-200baht for a meal, or a few hundred baht to get around I really thought that was a bargain. Today I had a major eye opener!
Went to a delicious Thai restaurant during my lunch break at Thai Massage class and for just 40baht I got a lunch of Pad Thai and a cup of coffee...that is not even a buck.
After class I went for a two hour Thai massage and it only cost 200baht.

Now that I have a good idea as to what I will be spending my money on during the rest of my time here my budget will be easier.

I am most grateful for the many blessings that are coming my way and all the wonderful people that I have met along this path!

What a Day!!!

Today was my first Massage class here in Chiang Mai, Thailand and on my way to school I got lost. I was given good directions from my friend "V" and the school. Was told it is about a 20-30 minutes walk so I left forty-five minutes ahead to give myself plenty of time. Forty minutes later I had to stop. I called the school to tell them were I was, so I hopped into a tuk-tuk and made my way to my class.
I really like their set up and how warm they are to the students. Just outside the main classroom there is an area where you wash your feet, how refreshing!
As I mentioned in previous blog this school is very flexible. They had several instructors in the room and students were in sections depending on where they were with their course studies. In my group two young women from Japan and myself. The course work was intense but it is an extremely comfortable learning environment.
It was really cool to learn new techniques and the instructor had positive things to say regarding my techniques. Thanks to two of my American teachers Rick Gold and Skip Kanester for their teachings and my internships in Seitai Shiatsu, TuiNa, and other Asian type courses years ago actually prepared me. It is funny because in TuiNa we work with fast techniques so here I really had to be mindful of slow rhythm.
When lunch time arrived my group and the teacher went to a nearby restaurant where I enjoyed a wonderful meal of Pad Thai and for only 25Baht.
Returned to class for several more hours. Some students shared with me a place where they go to get Thai massage....so I went for a 2hours session after class.
On my way home I got lost again. By now it is night time and I was within the walls of the Old City. I guess I was walking around in circles. I thought I was just outside the gates and in the right directions. I stopped to ask a few westerners if they could tell me at least where I was and based on my map I could figure how to get back home but unfortunately (or fortunately) they were of no help. I stopped in a DHL office where a kind Thai man gave me clear directions and it was not even five minutes away. I did have a wonderful conversation with him and shared some of my experiences in Thailand thus far and how much I love his country and people.
I made it home and in a few must study for a few before going to bed.

Setting up my Studies and more Activities

Today after some well deserve rest I went to register for my massage courses, jewelery making, arranged mountain trek, and of course some more cooking courses.
I am grateful for my friend who took me around and was patient while I ran my errands. Had to get photos, exchange more money, and get some more time for my phone.

There are no accidents!!!

Once I got to Chiang Mai I discovered sooooo many massage schools to go to. I found a few before leaving the states and I thought I had my mind made up. One school I actually put a deposit on but when I went there to finish my registration I had an uncomfortable feeling. There was a Qi-Gong class going on and they have it in front of the school so you can't get to the administration unless you walk through the class. I felt the eyes. I asked people who was sitting outside and they said you have to wait until the class is over. This is a respectable school and I am sure they are organized in many respects but it did not feel warm and welcoming to me. I still was going to go back because of the money I already put down on it (it was a small amount). The main reason I was considering it was because of the founder. My mentor has studied with him when he was at the Old Medicine Hospital. He also came to San Diego as a guest instructor at the school I done most of my massage training. The next school I was interested in was within a few blocks and as we drove into the compound it felt right. I was only going to take a few hours of courses at this particular school but once I met the administrator and one of the lead instructors I knew this was the school for me. I decided to forfeit my deposit at the other school to take my full course work at the School of Massage for Health Chiangmai. The other thing I really like about this school they are very flexible with the schedule which has become very important for me right now for my plans has changed considerably. I actually start class tomorrow.
After two days of classes I will be going on an Adventure trek which I will share with you on this blog. Now I can schedule many of my other activities now that I have a good sense of direction.
There are also tons of cooking schools around. I found another 5 or 6 schools that I am drawn to and will have to pin down which ones I will go to. I'm sure whichever ones I decide on will be fantastic.
I worked with my tattoo artist Poon at Magic Tattoos. He was amazing in working with me to create a incredible piece to blend in with my polar bears adding a big night moon, mountain, and water (river/brook). We begin the work next week.
Things are shaping up quite nicely.

Several days ago I went to my first of several cooking classes. I learned quite a bit and had lots of fun. The Chiang Mai Thai Farm Cooking School picked me up from my home (Elegant Lanna) and transported us to a nearby market where the instructor spoke about the various ingredients and how some of them are used. We then were able to walk around the market for about 20 minutes.

We arrived at their school on a farm which was very beautiful. The set up was really nice too. We were able to select from a nice selection of dishes we wanted to prepare. We took a walk around the garden as the instructor explain more about produce and how they work together in our various dishes.

The first table we worked at we learned how to make a curry paste. I guess I am really naive because I thought that curry were just the dry spice put together and you just add it to your food or to make a sauce you add coconut milk or something. This was a major learning experience for me. In a mortar with a pestle I pounded together a variety of ingredients such as shallots, chilis, lime rind, cummin seeds just to name a few and "voila" my curry paste. It does take some work but well worth it.

We learned about the variety of rices at the market but he went into more detail during this aspect and he started cooking jasmine and sticky rice. We proceeded to our work stations where we learned how to use the tools in the kitchen. Then based on what we selected we began the cooking. The instructor was informative and had a wonderful sense of humor.

After the first set of dishes we prepared we had a chance to eat what we made. When I ate my Tom Yam Kung (w/Shrimps) soup I was blown away. I even made a comment...."did I make that?" That was my favorite thing that I made and there were other dishes I enjoyed too.

Some of the other dishes I prepared was Kaeng Kiao Waan Gai (Green Curry with Chicken), Pad Si-ew (big noodles), Phad Kaprao Gai (Chicken w/Basil Leaves), and Bod Fak Thong (Pumpkin in Coconut Milk).

The course was a full day. You eat several times with plenty to take home with you. It was cool too because we had a chance to share each other dishes. Before taking us back home they gave us a nice little cooking book of the items that we prepared. I will be taking several more course trying a variety of schools. I really like the folks at the Thai Farm Cooking School.

Full Moon (Mae Taeng) River Rafting Trip

Just returned from an incredible experience along the Mae Taeng with Siam River Adventures.
They picked me up from my guesthouse and we drove north of Chiang Mai almost 2 hours into the mountain of the Hill Tribe people. The drive was somewhat rough but the view was spectacular.
We arrived at the base camp where a Thai lunch was served and we were shown to our hut. Actually I expected something a bit more primitive but it really was not that bad. I shared the hut with my new friend from Sweden.
After lunch we were given safety instructions as we prepared getting on our gear and getting into the raft for our first trip along the river. How incredible!!!
I did go River Rafting about 20 years ago with someone who claimed to be knowledgeable about this activity. The people we got the raft from asked if we have river raft before and if we felt safe. She said yes so I assumed she knew what she was talking about. I soon found out she was full of stuff! We preceded down the river and got stuck in some rocks. All and all I had a good time and did want to try it again but the opportunity never presented itself until now.
There is definitely more to it than I even imagine but with the great instructions and the wonderful Thai team it really made it a wonderful experience.
We headed down the river and the Natural scenery just mesmerized me! The first part of the river was pretty calm and we hit a few mild rapids but a little over half way we started to get into some serious rapids. As a team we were able to maneuver pretty well. There was one point where our raft got stuck in some rocks and it took us about 10 - 15 minutes to free ourselves and when we did I found myself underneath a rock where I hit my hard head (luckily I had a safety helmet on) and water gushed into my face and nose. I was told I was under water but it all happen so fast I didn't realize it.
After several hours we came to a resting place where fresh pineapple and watermelon was served before making the drive back to the camp base.
When I got out of my wet clothes I decided to take a short siesta lying down on the thin mat. A little later dinner was served. About an hour or so later we prepared for the Moonlight part of the trip. The moon was magnificent as we made our way down the river. In the calmness, I was moved by the shimmering of the moon upon the river....no words to really describe the intensity of this experience. We rode the raft for about 40 minutes or so before stopping along the shoreline where a bamboo fire was waiting for us. We then made the ride back to the site.

I would highly recommend this amazing trip to anyone who visits Thailand. They hold this special Full Moon trip most of the year but not so much during the rainy season. I would have liked to get more river rafting in but it is time to move on. Besides there is so much more I would

like to do and hope with upcoming massage course I can make the time to get to most of the things I would like to accomplish on this amazing Thailand trip.

Five Star Service at a Three Star Property

I left Kanachaburi several days ago and didn't want to let too much more time go by before sharing my appreciation for that experience.
Staying at the Legacy River Kwai Resort was really cool. I've worked at resorts and high end properties and I have to say the level of service that Mr Mana and his staff provided was exceptional.
From the moment I arrived where they offered a welcoming drink. What class. I really did feel like someone important (well, actually I am). Mr Mana communicated to his staff where even though most of them did not understand any English they new what to do. The food in the restaurant was top notch and took in some of the local culinary flavors. The sports center was a bonus with nice pool, Reflexology Walking Path, and fantastic massage staff.
During my stay there I was really in the zone....Sabai Sabai (Relax). It definitely slowed me down. At first my mind was racing but after a few days here my head was clear...perhaps for the first in quite some time. There are no accidents and even though it appeared to be a challenge at first, once I let go I started to see!
I also enjoyed the evening entertainment of signing from the musicians, rented a mountain bike riding on the extremely large property and feasted my eyes on the abundance of orchids and flowers.
Met a few westerners there....French and German. It was cool to interact with them.
Part of the traveling experience is about meeting and sharing with people.

I will come back to the Legacy River Kwai the next time I am in Thailand. It is a great place to prepare for your adventures or unwind before returning home.

Fish Therapy

Had an incredible and unique experience with something that is local to the region (per Mr Mana) called Fish Therapy. They have like a small pool of little fish that nibble at your feet eating away dead skin. It felt funny at first but once I allowed myself to truly be present I found it very soothing.
Just like everything else so far it was not expensive. Only 100 baht (just over 3 bucks).
I have lots of spider veins on my feet and ankle. I was really amazed how after just 20 minutes I saw at least 50%. Those little critters were going to town!
I asked my host Mr. Mana if I could receive this therapy in other areas of Thailand. He said there are a few places in Bangkok but not in Chiang Mai or Pattaya.

Tourists

The Legacy seems to be a popular place for European and Thai tourist.
The first two days the Europeans were here and it was kinda cool to speak ("Je parle petite Francais avec du monde") a little bit of French with some of them. It was funny because I was at the computer desk which is near the reception area and I think people thought I work here for they ask me questions. I didn't get it at first until one guy wanted to pay his bill with me....maybe I should have accepted his payment, teehee!

The French left this morning and now there is a giant group of Thai people. It should be interesting tonight in the lobby area where they have entertainment. I am looking forward to connecting and enjoying these wonderful people.

I already got my eye on what I am going to have for dinner....Thai style Seabass!

The Legacy River Kwai really know how to service their guests and provide an extremely high level of quality customer service. They show that they can handle large groups or deal with a single individual. I will write a nice piece later to share and express my appreciation of this experience!

Feeling Grounded!

The time difference when you read my posts while I am abroad (from California is 14 hours difference, well at least before the time change).

Had a great night sleep. Arose this morning before sunrise. Walked over to the Meditation Garden to take it in for a few before heading to the main facility for breakfast along the famous River Kwai. What a wonderful way to start the day off watching the Sun reflecting off the waters in the peaceful surroundings. I did not realize how stressed I've been all these years until these last few days of total letting go. I am grateful for this blessing!!!!

Nice way to begin this wonderful 6 week experience. The flights getting here was exhaustive but well worth it, especially now that I am here!

Being well taken care of here at the Legacy River Kwai Resort. Mr. Mana head of operations is providing a high level of customer service and has been extremely helpful answering all my questions (some of you know me, I can ask lots of questions). I will write more on this at a later time.

Had my first Thai Massage while in Thailand. When I was introduced to Thai Massage in the States I studied it in a introduction class practicing techniques learned with other students...giving and receiving. Having a full sessions where it was just about me is amazing.
As a student of Massage for nearly 17 years one of the things that I do when I get massages is taking in the techniques and pick up on some to apply in my own work. I have a tendency not to fully experience. While receiving bodywork here I tried to apply the same patterns...but guess what? I am giving into it! It has been many years since I just let go in receiving massage and usually when I get the work done in the State is more of a maintenance thing to keep me tuned up but I now see that I've cheated myself in not being in the moment when it comes to massage. Let this be a lession for practitioners.....to let go is the ultimate

Well, I finally was able to work around the language on my blog dashboard and now I am down to less that 20% and not able to charge up my MacBook at this time for my transformer/converter does not work here. So I don't know when I will get a chance to blog again.

For those that don't know yet, I finally made it to Thailand after not able to get my connecting flight from Japan because of flight delays. Every thing does happen for a reason no matter how it seems in the moment, we must trust!

Once I got to the airport in Bangkok, Thailand right at midnight I worked my way to a taxi to get to the Southern Bus Terminal and got on a 5am bus which took 2.5 hours then another 45 mins by jittney (or whatever they call them in Thailand). I made it to the Legacy River Kwai Resort in Kanachaburi. It is a very large property, they have roads within the compound. Nice and airy and lots of lush green to take in right at the river. A wonderful place to be and relax after a long exhaustive several days of flying.

On Saturday morning I will be taking a train back to Bangkok and make my way to Bangkok's other airport to fly up north to Chiang Mai where I will be for most of the trip (almost one month).

The guidebook, internet researching, and word of mouth was extremely helpful as I planned this trip and I would say that it did prepare me for the most part, but I have to say all of the insights does not replace the actual experience. Already I had some experiences in Bangkok that I really was not prepare for.

Thanks to my dear friend Rick for his simple words.....breathe and experience! Keeping that in mind had helped me through those things.
I am GRATEFUL for being here and the opportunity to expand my consciousness and explore who I am through this amazing journey.

My previous International travels have been focused throughout Europe (besides my Navy days). My first trip was in 1979 and quite a few trips during the 80's doing the backpack thing.

My information resources were guide books and talking with people along the way. This was before "Google". In my opinion, in this era they both play an important part in the experience. I was able to of course purchase my airline tickets, resorts & hotel arrangements, pay deposit on massage courses, pay for my "Moonlight River Rafting" trip, and I have met people.
With the Internet (such as Facebook) I discovered friends from all over that have been able to share experiences.

I've also made personal contact with people in Thailand via email. One gentleman is part of the Petanque club in Pattaya. They had a major Petanque world tournament there several years ago and seems to be well known. It will be cool to play there. I've learn so much researching the Internet. I will also experience the people and learn as I go.

As the countdown continues....40 days and a wake up!

As this fantastic trip approaches I am starting to feel the butterflies in my stomach! It has elevated to a different level of excitement and gratitude.

Although most of my time is planned with scheduled activities, massage and cooking courses I've allowed time to flow with my days especially the first two weeks and the last week. I want to take in the local culture and flavor!
During this trip to Thailand I will be visiting four cities. Most of my time and activities will be in the northern part of the country; Chiang Mai, along with visits to Kanchanaburi, Pattaya, and Bangkok. There are other cities and activities I would love to do but I don't want to put more on my plate than I already have but I will allow myself to be flexible.

I do pride myself on my organizational skills and have made many arrangements. All those trips to Europe has help considerably with this venture. The process in itself has been exciting and watching the dream being realized is moving to say the least!

In less than two months I will be on the other side of the world experiencing an unfamiliar culture. My growth so far has been expansive so I can only imagine how this will impact me. I am grateful to have the opportunity to follow through with this dream.

A Dream Surfaces

Sitting in one of my favorite local coffee shops having a relaxed late morning reflecting on my upcoming trip. I brought some of my trip material with me to organize in my Thailand folder. I've had to re-evaluate my itinerary and expenses many times over. However it shapes up it is going to be an amazing experience that will benefit me on many levels!
When the trip planning started to take shape I was very excited and yet wonder how I was going to swing it (financially and time off work). It really did not matter how volatile my feelings were I knew deep inside that it will happen. Even though some financial challenges presented themselves, Thailand was still going to happen. I believe that my passion was being tested. I did know about 10 years ago that one day I was going to travel to Asia to study bodywork and at that time it was a seed planted in my subconscious. As I was reflecting on where I was in my Massage experience late last year it became clear that it was time for me to take my training to another level and that is when the dream surfaced. So here I was, where I've been other times in my life, expanding out of my comfort zone and do what I am internally driven to do or do I play it safe and continue to work hoping that one day I will feed the hunger and nourish my soul or to live in this moment and allow my life's experiences to flow through me.
I am grateful for my talents and the quality of my touch. Massage is part of my life's work and I see myself involved with it on one level or another well into my later years.

Part of the Experience

Doing the Parking thing does wear me down at times, however when I picture myself in Thailand doing a variety of things I have listed really helps with my days. Although I have several things on my plate, at the moment this experience gives me lots of juice.
Over the last several months my plans have expanded and this adds to the total experience. I am now compiling my information into an easy one touch folder in which I journal, log, and keep track of my spending.
Earlier in the process one of my concerns was to have enough time to take off work. I have made sacrifices to build up my time and now with the mandatory furlough for City employees I will have just enough for my six week trip.
With plane ticket in hand and having saved most of the money for the this trip I am focusing on doing some extra massage sessions and a few more gift basket sales which will give me what I need to make it a Magnificent experience.

Putting it Together

Many thanks for the feedback from friends who have traveled in Thailand. So far, the best suggested resource is the "Lonely Plant" guidebook for Thailand.
Between this fantastic guidebook, Internet research, emailing contacts over there and all the wonderful feedback from friends I think I have come up with an interesting itinerary (I'll share more with you later on that).
I have made and confirmed accommodations in several Cities. Also I put a deposit on the Full Moon River Rafting Trip for November 2-3rd. My list of "things to do" has expanded in the last several weeks. I actually use visualization techniques seeing myself doing a variety of things and connecting with the people and culture.
Six weeks of this amazing experience that will effect me on many different levels.

I've been spending some time with the Rosetta Stone language course for Thai and took my first test recently scoring a 78%, not bad for the first one.

Another level of learning

Recently I acquire the Rosetta Stone Language course for Thai. I am thinking this will benefit me during my travels and aide in my total Thailand experience! I just put the disc in and let the computer do the work and went through the practice (I think) lessons 1 and 2. After I check those out I realized that I need to set up my own profile and settings, I presume once it is set it keeps track of your personal progress. Let that be a lesson for you to read over the material.

I opened a personal checking account in April 2008 at U.S. Bank around the same time we set up the Kidz Hearts Foundation bank account. The attraction was two-fold. The option that I took was the debit card which is tied in with my Northwest World Perks mileage program where for every dollar I get a mile and for opening the account I received $75 in groceries.
Whenever I was going to make a purchase of any size I would take the money from my credit union account and deposit into the U.S. Bank account. When I accumulated the funds for my airline tickets I put it into the bank. Shortly after while online finding and making the arrangements my debit card was declined. Of course I called customer service and found that I have a daily spending limit of $1,000. This makes no sense, it is my money. They tell me it is for my protection and assured me that if called first they will release the funds. I attempted to do this again and guess what? Declined! I called again and the customer service person stated that the computer was down and there was no way to help me. When I questioned the limit they said that Visa sets the limit and they would have to be the ones to raise it for regular spending. When I called Visa they said that was not true, it is the bank that set the limit and they can change it in the branch.
What I end up doing is using the credit union account to pay for the airline tickets and missed out on the mileage points. I went into the bank to make a large withdraw. The teller tried to be helpful and we got into a conversation about my experiences with them. She stated that she can fix it but at this point I know I was done with them. The only thing I was waiting for at this point is for charges to be cleared before closing this account.
To top it off Northwest has merged with Delta and will no longer be using this mileage plan (but all my miles will be transfer to Delta existing mileage program). I asked several different tellers about this and got a variety of responses that did not answer my questions.

In the almost 35 years of banking experience I have not encounter such terrible customer service and unethical practices (I have had many other situations with them that I have not expressed, no sense in hashing through all the negativity). Now we will need to move our Kidz Hearts account. I no longer have trust in U.S. Bank.

I am relieved after this ordeal! Now with ticket in hand I can continue my planning.

Nice Balance

I have a pretty good idea of how my time will be spent in Thailand. The great thing about the massage training is that there are some good and well known schools there with a variety of schedules and training. Most schools that teach Thai Massage classes are Monday to Friday for 6 hours per day. The other course have off type schedules even some on weekends. I am searching out one Thai Massage teacher to work with. If I am able to study with him I will fit the other courses/schools around that. Altogether, I am taking about 120hrs of massage training with half of that for Nuad Bo-Rarn.

The cooking courses that I am interested in are full days, picking up from your guesthouse or hotel around 8:30am returning you about 5pm. My intent is to take 3 or 4 of these and I feel good about the two schools that I've selected (which operates 7 days per week) out of the many that I've found. These cooking classes will fit in between my massage studies schedule. Even though I will have my itinerary laid out I know I have to be open. So in that spirit I'll use the plan as a guide and trust the gifts along the path!

One of my adventure highlights takes place during the full moon (November 2nd). So whatever I am doing can fit around this. It is the Full-Moon White Water River Rafting trip. They have two trips. The first trip starts the day before the full moon and the second the day of. You river raft during the day, stop for dinner and relaxation and another several hours at night under the moonlight. I am really drawn to do this. I did do a rafting trip about 20 years ago and often talk about it over the years how I so much wanted to experience that again, well now I have an extra special opportunity. I am all over it!!!

I will be doing some other connecting to nature type thing, hitting up the Night Bazaar, and of course getting lots of Bodywork done. In this journey, I will be traveling alone. There has been a lot of planning so far. In the months to come the preparation is taking place and six months will be here before you know it. That is why we always want to be present and experience each moment for that is what adds to the quality of your life!

Taste of Thai

Although my focus for going to Thailand is to continue my studies in massage I cannot resist the opportunity to take a few Thai Cooking courses. There are over 15 Cooking schools in Chiang Mai which is in the Northern part of the kingdom.

In my research the most important things to me were flexibility in schedule and variety in the recipes. I found at least five schools that foot the bill however there are two that I am really drawn to:

Thai Farm Cooking school www.thaifarmcooking.net This Organic Farm is perfect for grounding myself once I arrive. This school was listed in several guidebooks and Thailand websites.

Siam Rice Thai Cookery www.siamricethaicookery.com This one is neat and seems very traditional. This school has wonderful remarks from previous students.

My intention is to take 3-4 day cooking classes at these two schools. I will remain open, who knows I may come across a real gem.

Wealth of Information

The public library has been a resource that I've indudge myself with from time to time. In the last ten years (working for the City) I primarily use it to get out of the heat especially during the summers while working and often times use the computer for a variety of things such as catching up on emails or doing research for KIDZ HEARTS. As far as the material in the library I mostly borrow DVD's and sometimes positive audio programs. For all this I am GRATEFUL!

Few days ago, I was donating books to the library when it occurred to me to research Thailand, why didn't I think of that before?

I asked and received help from the librian. She was extremely helpful and I walked out of there with more material than ever before. Besides cultural and guide books, I found some videos in Thai and language tapes. This is a wonderful companion to the information I discovered with my online research.

For me the process itself has been encouraging, insightful, and fun!!! This has also shown me that when I get excited about something there is no limit to what I can absorb. The educational piece of this has broaden my awareness and appreciation.

I am open to any feedback, input, or suggestions you may have to elevate my experience.

Researching Trip

I am happy to share with you that a target of mine for about 10 years is being realized. As most of you know I am passionate about massage and particularly in Asian Healing. In 1992 I took my first Massage class at International Professional School of Bodywork (IPSB) after recovering from a major back injury while working for San Diego Unified School District. I had lower back surgery before my awareness of alternative health. Taking the massage training was against my doctors advice however I knew deep inside that it was something that I needed to do and boy I am so glad I did. I discovered a talent within me that has been the source of inspiration on a variety of levels. For all of this I am grateful!

Although, I took some introduction classes in Oriental massage modalities it was not until the late 1990's when I took a Seitai Shiatsu internship with my teacher, mentor, and friend Rick Gold that I knew I was on a special path. A year or so later I took an intro Thai Massage class with Rick and I really enjoyed giving and receiving this work. It was only a weekend class but I was able to pick up techniques that I still use today. Meanwhile I continued my training receiving certification in tuina (Chinese Massage). I remember thinking I sure would love to go to China or Thailand to study.

I think because most of my training was in Tuina working with another teacher, mentor and friend, Skip Kanester I was mostly drawn to go to China but still entertained the possibility of going to Thailand. This idea was still in the background of my thinking. Late last year I was overcome with a deep feeling and desire to go to Thailand. A few months ago it became stronger. I started to look online at different schools over there and where did I want to study, Bangkok or Chiang Mai. The research has begun!

So, now I am here in the planning stage and the energy that I feel inspires me in many areas of my life and I feel so much richer for it! I have narrowed down that I will be training in Chiang Mai and will be leaving the states in late October returning early December. Also I have select the schools I am considering and waiting to hear back from one school perticular to confirm if they will be offering the course I want while I am there, I also have some alternatives.

Even though my focus is in my massage training, I was exploring the internet and discovered many things I want to do while I am over there, such as take a few cooking classes, go wild river rafting, elephant ride, and a variety of other things that I will share via Blog along with photos.
